BRC announces Knowledge Translation grant awardees
The Brain Repair Centre is pleased to announce the awardees of the Knowledge Translation grants. Dr. Sean Christie and Dr. Victor Rafuse will be awarded the KT grants for 2022.
Dr. Sean Christie, who is the Vice Chair and Director of Research in the division of neurosurgery at Dalhousie, will be awarded for his research titled “Understanding spinal cord blood flow after traumatic injury.” Dr. Christie’s research outlines the importance of managing blood flow to the spinal cord through drugs and monitoring. The promising research has potential to greatly benefit patients with spinal cord injury and can be applied to clinical settings.
Dr. Victor Rafuse and Dr. Laura Dumas will be awarded for their research titled “Unravelling Schwann cell diversity in healthy and injured peripheral nerves.” For their work, Dr. Rafuse and Dr. Dumas examine the importance of identifying Schwann cells, which are supporting cells for neurons and repair neuron damage from traumatic injury. Since the diversity of Schwann cells is recently being discovered, Dr. Rafuse and Dr. Dumas propose to label and colour the Schwann cells in hopes of discovering the healing processes of different types of these cells.
The BRC started distributing the KT Grant nine years ago and continue to help researchers further develop their work and innovation and allows them to leverage additional funding.
