CMHA NS Division Welcomes Johanne Thompson as New ED 

The Board of Directors of the Canadian Mental Health Association Nova Scotia Division (CMHA NS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Johanne Thompson as its new Executive Director, effective Monday, January 27, 2025. 

Originally from London, Ontario, Johanne brings over two decades of leadership experience across the social services, healthcare, and community sectors.

With an extensive background in administration, social services, program planning, human resources, recreation management, advocacy, and leadership, Johanne is well-equipped to drive CMHA NS forward in its mission to improve mental health services for all Nova Scotians. 

“We are confident that, with her diverse skill set and wealth of experience, Johanne will lead CMHA NS Division in a collaborative, inclusive and empathic manner.  She will use our strategic plan and ongoing initiatives to continue building on the legacy of supporting mental health within the province.” said David Benoit, Chair of the Board of Directors at CMHA Nova Scotia.  

Johanne expressed her excitement about the opportunity to join the CMHA NS team and contribute to the organization’s mission. “I am eager to leverage my experience and passion for community and mental health to drive impactful initiatives across the province. I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated team at CMHA NS to enhance mental health services and promote well-being.” 

She further expressed her enthusiasm for working collaboratively with partners across the province and nation to re-imagine the future of mental healthcare in Canada. 

The Board of Directors would also like to take this opportunity to thank Kathy Murphy for her dedication and leadership as Interim Executive Director. Kathy served in the role from August 2024 to February 12, 2025, providing essential guidance during this transitional period.   

The Board would also like to recognize the incredible work of Karn Nichols, who was the previous permanent Executive Director for the Division and the amazing work she undertook to advance the support and advocacy for mental health in the province.  

CMHA Nova Scotia is committed to promoting mental health and wellness, supporting individuals affected by mental illness, and advocating for greater understanding and services for mental health throughout the province.
