PREP Writing Sessions

Facilitated by Janice MacDonald Eddington and Dr. Kala Hirtle, Writing Centre

Starting a Lay Summary or a Scientific Abstract

Abstracts and lay summaries are often the first-read but last-written support documents of larger papers and can be the key to a conference acceptance. These comparably tiny documents therefore need to make a big impact. Starting a Lay Summary or a Scientific will explore why they are written, the structure(s) they take in scientific disciplines, and will also demonstrate using the abstract as a writing and organizational strategy. Polishing and improving existing Summary/Abstract will cover revision strategies for abstracts and lay summaries and provide the opportunity to exchange documents with peers in the workshop for feedback (a built-in non- specialist audience!). The workshop will also include tips and strategies for effective peer review.

Open to all DAL Graduate Students, Post Doc Fellow’s, Faculty, and Research Staff
